What motivates you? That’s the question I’d like to ask in this
inaugural column on motivation. Are you motivated by fame, fortune or fear. Or is it something deeper that fans the flames inside of you.
Perhaps you are like Jeanne Louise Calment whose burning desire
enabled her to do something that no other human being has done before.

A feat so spectacular that it generated headlines around the globe,
got her a role in a motion picture, and landed her in the Guinness
Book of World Records. A record that has yet to be beaten.

Jeanne Louise, however, did not initially motivate herself. It was
someone else who drew the line in the sand. But, it became a line she was determined to cross.

In motivation we talk about getting outside of one’s comfort zone. It
is only when we are uncomfortable that we begin to get motivated.
Usually to get back into our comfort zone as quickly as possible.

Born into the family of a middle-class store owner, Calment was
firmly entrenched in her comfort zone. At age 21 she married a
wealthy store owner and lived a life of leisure. She pursued her
hobbies of tennis, the opera, and sampling France’s famous wines.
Over the years she met Impressionist painter Van Gogh; watched the erection of the Eiffel Tower; and attended the funeral of Hunchback
of Notre Dame, author, Victor Hugo.

Twenty years after her husband passed away, she had reached a stage in life where she had pretty much achieved everything that she was
going to achieve. Then along came a lawyer. The lawyer made Jeanne
Louise a proposition. She accepted it. He thought he was simply
making a smart business deal. Inadvertently he gave her a goal. It
took her 30 years to achieve it, but achieve it she did.

Are you willing to keep your goals alive for 30 years? At what point
do you give up? Thomas Edison never gave up, instead he said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Winston Churchill during the bleakest hours of World War II kept an entire country motivated with this die-hard conviction: “We shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches… in the fields and in the streets… we shall never surrender.”

Many of us give up too soon because we set limits on our goals.
Achieving a goal begins with determination. Then it’s just a matter
of our giving them attention and energy.

When Jeanne Louise was 92 years old, attorney François Raffray, age 47, offered to pay her $500 per month (a fortune in 1967) for the
rest of her life, if she would leave her house to him in her will.
According to the actuarial tables it was a great deal. Here was an
heir-less woman who had survived her husband, children, and
grandchildren. A woman who was just biding her time with nothing to live for. That is until Raffray came along and offered up the “sucker-bet” that she would soon die. It was motivation enough for Jeanne, who was determined to beat the lawyer. Thirty years later, Raffray became the “sucker” when he passed away first at age 77.

When asked about this by the press, Calment simply said, “In life,
one sometimes make bad deals.” Having met her goal, Jeanne passed away five months later. But on her way to this end, she achieved
something else: at 122 years old, she became the oldest person to
have ever lived.

In future articles we’ll examine further the ways in which motivation works. How to motivate ourselves, our employees, customers,
volunteers, friends, loved ones and children. I would like to get
your feedback on which of these areas of motivation are of most
interest to you. I’d also like to hear your stories of how you may
have overcome adversity and what pushed you to go the distance.
Please email me with your suggestions and stories.

**
Events form the moments of our lives. We look forward to them with excitement and joy.
We cherish the times when we can gather with others, when we deepen the bonds with them. That’s because events are something that usually involves a hug! The warmth we feel when we share our lives with others illumines our experience and creates the fabric of our life story.

And events are anything that takes you out of your routine - they can be happy moments, or they can be transitions - all joyful, all full of movement.
Caution: Some events can take us out of our comfort Zone and this is when you are susceptible to slipping out of your relationship with your body.

***Here are 3 Body Knowledge ™Steps that will make all the world of difference

#1 Prepare

When you prepare for an event, you want to move with it. Ask your body how she feels about this event, and move with your body. Take her for a walk, do movement, clean out the garage, weed the garden, walk the dog. Whatever feels natural to you, do it. Stretch - or run. Go to the place where you can ask your body - in movement - to tell you how you want to negotiate this event.

#2 Create a Game Plan
Think of an upcoming event. Prepare (as much as you can)
Ahead of time
how you can make your body feel as comfortable as possible.

#3 Get Practical
Expectations of others may challenge our relationship with our body.
Some of these are spoken (perhaps in the invitation when the hours and attire of the event are announced), or perhaps by family members or loved ones who will attend with us. Very likely, the reason we’re going to the event is to experience it with these people. So, remember to bring your body with you to the event.

Footnote:
Enjoy yourself with your body so that both of you have an enjoyable time with everyone around you.

“If only I could persuade more people to work with me,” is a thought I’m sure you’ve had many times.
Interestingly, many people equate persuasion with personality. However persuasion has very little do do with personality, except perhaps for the personal trait of learning and trying new ideas.
Persuasion is a science, with certain laws that work unfailingly - if we only apply them. This is the premise of a new book by Noah Goldstein, Steve Martin and Robert Cialdini called, “Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive.”
The book is based on scientific studies that reveal these laws and how they can be applied in a variety of situations. As I read it, I couldn’t help but think of all the ways these laws of persuasion could be applied to marketing for Independent Professionals.
For the next several weeks I’m going to share with you some very practical application of these laws. Instead of theory, I’ll give you hands-on strategies and techniques you can apply to your business immediately.
But first… Is persuasion manipulation?
Here’s how I think of it. Persuasion is communicating in such a way that more people respond to what you have to offer. If you have a valuable service and deliver what you promised, and your clients are satisfied, then you are not manipulating.
Manipulation, on the other hand, has an agenda that fails to take your clients’ satisfaction into account. Manipulation is all about what you get but little about what your clients get.
If you’re not manipulating, please don’t feel guilty about increasing your persuasive skills! Ultimately, persuasion will benefit your clients while enriching yourself at the same time.
The Law of Social Proof
This one is simple, but one of the most powerful laws of persuasion. People will more likely buy something if you can offer proof that others have bought the same thing and gotten favorable results.
This law can be applied in quite obvious, and also subtle ways. Here are a few that most Independent Professionals can apply.
1. Collect and communicate testimonials. My favorite example is Alan Weiss’s testimonial book. Alan asks all his clients for a testimonial letter if they are happy with the service provided. He has collected hundreds, usually on the client’s letterhead.
Alan then copies these letters and binds them into a book about an inch and a half thick. He gives this book to prospective clients at their first meeting. The proof of these testimonials is very powerful and they help him to close many large projects.
2. Case Studies should be at the heart of any web site. Stories of clients you’ve worked with and the difference your services made are more powerful than any other written marketing materials.
3. Prepare stories about client successes to relate when someone asks what you do. “Perhaps the best way to explain what I do is to give you an example of a client I worked with recently…” This tends to be more effective than most “elevator speeches.”
4. Drop names appropriately. If you’ve worked with certain clients who are known and respected, don’t keep it a secret. List them on your web site. Bring them up in conversation with some degree of subtlety, making sure not to reveal proprietary information.
5. Incorporating audio and video testimonials and case studies on web sites is a growing trend. The bottom line is that sound and sight are much more persuasive than just the written word. The best of these talk about real results achieved with your services.
6. When using testimonials or case studies, the key is believability. Never stretch the truth. Provide enough details to give your prospects a real sense of the value your clients have received. Identify key benefits, results or outcomes, not just the fact that your clients liked working with you.
What social proof can you provide when communicating about your services? Ignoring this law will greatly diminish your ability to get more clients to work with you.

The More Clients Bottom Line: Apply the Law of Social Proof in all your marketing communication. This universal law will help your prospects feel more confident about your services and assure them that they are taking very little risk by working with you.

What other ways have you applied the Law of Social Proof? Please share on the More Clients Blog.

By Sheri McConnell

Much of my success with membership-based businesses is also because of my ability to continuously grow in the area of “mindsets”. Here are a number of tips to help you think and create in a big way.
Tip One-Honor Your Urges
One of the main reasons I left the corporate world and took the entrepreneurial plunge many years ago was so I could do more of what I enjoyed and less of what I hated. It makes sense doesn’t it? Yet, you would be surprised how many entrepreneurs don’t do more of what they love. Make sure you take advantage of the freedom you have by setting boundaries early on in your business. Successful entrepreneurs don’t create boundaries after they are wealthy. They create them so they can become wealthy. Not always being accessible actually creates scarcity and attracts more business. From now on when you want to take off and head to Starbucks or you want to take a week off and go on vacation, honor those urges, plan accordingly, and then do it.
Tip Two-You Can Work Hard and Still Have Fun
When you first start your company, you probably will wear all the hats and work harder than you ever have. But once the business is built and you start to gain new customers and sell products, it is a lot of fun. The best part of being a leader is being able to pick up the phone and have access to someone you have admired for years because you are a gatekeeper to a database of customers. You learn so much from those experts you now have access to, and your customers will love you for it when you graciously pass new information on to them.
Tip Three-Let Go To Grow
One of the main reasons I became an entrepreneur and left the corporate world back in 1999 was because I loved the freedom to just let go and have fun. I wanted to have a higher quality of life where I could be creative and earn more for that creativity. Unfortunately, what happens with many entrepreneurs in start up is they get too intense and end up chasing away the most beneficial business and personal relationships. Always remember “why” you are pursuing this dream in the first place and remember to let go and have fun with the people you meet and do business with. I love working with people who make me laugh, who have a wicked sense of humor, who get passionate about their causes, and who know how to let go, be themselves, and make “work” fun. The cool thing is these types of people attract others like them, and your fun “network” then multiplies exponentially. So do your revenues. Bottom line: Letting go and having fun in business is good for the soul and for the bank account.
Tip Six-Build Millionaire Relationships
NO ONE can reach seven figures without building crucial business and personal relationships along the way. The membership-based business model is a millionaire business model and by using it, you attract important relationships more easily. Millionaire relationships aren’t always measured by the financial return on investment (ROI) you receive either. One of the most exciting parts of building a company that you are passionate about is all of the dynamic and energetic people you can access. This type of ROI often shows up in the form of real people who serve as resources when you need them. All you have to do is decide to take action and work on getting to know people. Then you can communicate how your company can help them solve their problems.
Tip Seven-Understand Entrepreneurial Energy
Millionaires rarely sit down, and they are often in great shape. They also don’t watch TV much, and they give of themselves freely. Millionaires have lots of entrepreneurial energy. They are creative, passionate, risk takers, who are big thinkers and always evolving. If this description isn’t you yet, start aiming for these behaviors today. Know that what you eat and if you exercise directly affects your bottom line. People are attracted to people (and companies) who take care of themselves and are full of energy. What you feed your brain (literally) determines your ability to solve million-dollar problems and come up with million-dollar ideas. (Just some food for thought!)
Sheri McConnell is the President of the National Association of Women Writers and the Assn of Web Entrepreneurs. She helps women writers and entrepreneurs discover, create, and profit from their intellectual knowledge. Want to learn more about membership-based businesses? Visit www.createyourgroup.com. Sheri lives in San Antonio, Texas with her husband Seth and their four children.

by Alexandria K. Brown

Many new business owners ask me, “Should I offer a guarantee? I know it will help sales, but the risk really scares me.” I offer guarantees on everything I sell, but that doesn’t mean you should too. Here are some factors to consider and some ideas to get you started.

The Pros:

A guarantee puts your prospect at ease, giving her no reason NOT to buy or NOT to work with you. After all, if you don’t stand behind your product or service 100%, what are you doing in business?

This is especially true if you’re selling products via the Internet. People at your website don’t have the chance to meet you in person and see that you’re legitimate, so it’s your job to give them complete confidence in buying from you.

The Cons:

With some service-based businesses such as consulting, it may be hard to guarantee your work or your results. (Especially if your clients’ cooperation is required to ensure their success.)

Also, a few turkeys may capitalize on your generosity. For example, my “Boost Business With Your Own E-zine” system was originally an e-book when I launched it a few years ago. It would not be unusual to see a person purchase it, download it, and request a refund 2 minutes later. Obviously they hadn’t even read it yet and they just wanted to get the information without paying for it.

But in my experience with Internet *info-products*, the amount of sales you GAIN from offering a guarantee dramatically outweighs the risk. (Once you get into coaching programs, it’s a whole different ballgame. That’s another article to come later.)

Types of Guarantees You Can Offer

“Money Back” or “Satisfaction”: You promise to refund your customer in full if the product does not work or if she’s not happy with your product.

“Price-Protection”: This can mean either locking in a price forever, such as with services or memberships that are billed on a recurring basis, or guaranteeing that you have the lowest price anywhere for that particular service or product.

“On-time”: If your clients are always concerned about getting your service or product on time, this is a good one for you.

And these are just a few ideas!

Should You Make it Easy, or Hard?

Some business owners make their customers jump through hoops to get their money back. While I understand not wanting to make it TOO easy to get an instant refund, there are risks. If you make it really hard, your customers may just skip dealing with you and go direct to their credit card company.

This process is called a “chargeback”, which can reflect negatively on your vendor merchant account standing as well as result in penalty fees for the vendor. So obviously, as a vendor, you want to avoid chargebacks by making the refund process easy for your customers.

(However there are definitely times you can fight back and win, when you are in the right.)

Should There Be a Time Limit?

Setting a time limit is up to you. Common ones are 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, a year, or a lifetime. Some studies show the longer the guarantee, the less returns you’ll get. Why? Customers are more likely to mark their calendar regarding a shorter guarantee. With a longer guarantee, they don’t feel pressured, so many of them forget about it.

How Should You Word It?

There are many ways to word guarantees, so to get started, I’d look at the standards in your industry. For information products, many people are modeling the guarantee I have on my “Boost Business With Your Own E-zine” system” sales page.

Feel free to do the same or modify it to your liking. I won’t mind at all!
